It was really good to see media picking up on one of my Questions on Notice after years of efforts in this space, including to get the STA taskforce reignited after it stalled. Every bit of advocacy helps with WA Today writing an article on the issue (click here to read) and the Queensland Government now committing to reviewing the impact of Airbnb-style rentals on the broader housing market in Queensland.

QUESTION: With reference to New South Wales having introduced a statewide regulatory framework for Short Term Accommodation – Will the Deputy Premier advise when similar or otherwise will be introduced in Queensland?

ANSWER: The Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning is reviewing the planning framework’s approach to regulating residential development to ensure it supports delivery of diverse housing forms. This review includes how short term rental accommodation is regulated under the planning framework, recognising the need for a balanced approach to how we use our homes for short-term and long-term accommodation. The regulatory framework for short term rental accommodation will be considered in terms of its ability to provide an additional income stream for homeowners, and its positive contribution to housing affordability, as well as any impacts on the availability and affordability of longer-term rental accommodation and will have regard to the statewide regulatory framework recently introduced in New South Wales.

We will continue to advocate on this and provide a further update once the regulatory framework is developed.
