The Noosa River is part of the lifeblood of our community for recreational, economic & environmental reasons. Rivers, & where they flow into the ocean are not owned by private, government or community entities, as land is. They are managed on behalf of tax payers via the State Government, which through various departments determines the who, what and how.

These agencies include: Dept. of Main Roads and Transport (Maritime Safety QLD), Dept. of Agriculture and Fisheries (QLD Boating and Fisheries Patrol), Dept. of Environment & Heritage Protection and the Dept. of Natural Resources and Mines.

Responsibility for the foreshore including river banks and access is by Noosa Council. Over the last five years there have been a number of community consultations through forums and the Community Jury regarding issues impacting the river. The recommendation from the Community Jury (December 2015) was for some management of the river to be transferred from the State Government to the community, through Noosa Council. This management included anchoring, mooring and living on board vessels.

Negotiations between Council and the State Government have not yet secured any agreement. Noosa Council currently have two draft plans for community consultation that relate to the river. The Noosaville Foreshore Management Plan consultation is currently underway and closes February 22, while the Noosa River Plan consultation is due to come out shortly.
