In response to our ongoing advocacy with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), as well by residents, raising concerns about speeding and safety matters on McKinnon Drive, TMR is conducting a Speed Limit Review currently and has recently completed detailed investigations leading to road safety enhancements planned for its mid‑year program of works. TMR advise that these are to address resident safety concerns and although design work is underway, have outlined the changes as below.

TMR has outlined several key changes aimed at improving safety at the Illoura Place and Kimbah Court intersections including that:

TMR will modify the linemarking at these intersections to provide channelised right-turn lanes on McKinnon Drive. These will allow right-turning vehicles on McKinnon Drive to enter the short, dedicated turning lane, while through traffic diverts to the left, similar to the existing arrangement at the Silverwood Drive intersection.

As part of above, the dashed centre line on approach and through the intersections will be changed to a continuous solid line which will prevent overtaking manoeuvres. The new continuous barrier centre line at the Kimbah Court intersection will be extended through to the Carriage Way intersection. These works will address resident feedback about through traffic overtaking at these intersections.

TMR will also be implementing the following improvements to turning conditions from Silverwood Drive:

TMR will modify the linemarking at the intersection to remove the low angle tapered line marking onto McKinnon Drive and encourage motorists to approach McKinnon Drive and turn left at an approximate right angle to McKinnon Drive.

As part of these works, TMR will also confirm sight lines are sufficient for motorists emerging from Silverwood Drive to judge gaps in through traffic and will assess if any vegetation clearing is required.

TMR have confirmed that these works are in addition to those implemented on McKinnon Drive in 2025, including:

Installation of a new 60 km/h speed limit on the northern end of McKinnon Drive for approximately 300 metres from the intersections with Louis Bazzo Drive.

Installation of ‘School bus route next 13km’ signs on McKinnon Drive near Louis Bazzo Drive intersection and to the south of Noosa Banks Drive.

We will provide further updates once we have an official start date from TMR for the work to commence and once the outcomes of the Speed Limit Review have been finalised and the outcomes are available.
