Further to our August 2025 update regarding the former Tewantin TAFE site, the NRA Collaborative, the successful applicant from the 2021 Expression of Interest (EOI) process, completed a reassessment of the existing buildings in January 2026.
Following the reassessment, we were advised that revitalising the existing structures is no longer considered viable. This is due to significant deterioration between the 2021 EOI process and the site transfer in 2025, including vandalism, weathering and multiple flooding incidents caused by burst water mains. As a result, the original proposal, which included a school of design, has been revised.
Revised proposal
Following an onsite meeting to review the condition of the buildings, we were advised that the updated proposal is for independent seniors’ living. This use aligns with the site’s Community Facilities zoning and, according to the NRA Collaborative, would not require vegetation clearing or impact biodiversity overlays.
While the proposal addresses an identified housing need within the Noosa electorate, we have reiterated that affordable accommodation for workers remains a priority and should also be considered, noting that recent planning amendments now recognise this as a viable use within the Community Facilities Zone. Planning pathway
We understand that the NRA Collaborative is also considering pursuing a state planning pathway and we have reiterated the importance of Noosa Shire Council being fully involved in assessment and consultation processes to ensure that community views and the intent of the local planning scheme are properly considered.
Community use and education outcomes
During the original EOI process, the State Government indicated that community use space would be incorporated into the site. As this does not appear to form part of the revised proposal, we have sought clarification as to how this commitment may be addressed.
In line with advocacy since 2021 and given the closure of the TAFE in 2014 without community consultation, we have also requested that any funds generated from the Queensland Government’s sale of the site be retained for reinvestment within the Noosa electorate, including consideration of a Noosa learning hub or similar educational facility.
At the request of constituents, we have asked that any salvageable materials from the site, including seating and other fixtures, be made available to local schools, sporting clubs and community organisations where appropriate.
At this stage, no further details have been provided. We will continue to update the community as additional information becomes available and look forward to an outcome that meets the needs and expectations of the Noosa community.

To summarise the history, Sandy has been advocating for the decommissioned Noosa TAFE site to be utilised to benefit our community, since it was closed by the State Government without community consultation back in 2014. This long journey, and after Noosa Council rejected the opportunity to purchase the site in 2020, culminated in the EOI process mentioned earlier with successful proponents chosen, the only hurdle remaining being the finalisation of Native Title processes over the Noosa region, which was completed in late 2024.
