The following update (in italics) has been provided by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) regarding the construction of the Six Mile Creek Bridge replacement project:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is pleased to announce the new Six Mile Creek Bridge, on Pomona-Kin Kin Road, located 3kms north of Pomona, is now opened to traffic. The new bridge will be under traffic control for a short period of time then open to two lanes.

The new bridge with a wider bridge deck and wider shoulders replaces the exiting single lane timber bridge over Six Mile Creek, built in 1934. The new bridge will also withstand more significant flood events, reducing the frequency and duration of closures in comparison to the existing timber bridge.

The new bridge has been constructed offline to the west of the existing bridge. During construction, traffic was maintained on the existing road and bridge, reducing impact on motorists traveling through the area.

Construction is continuing on associated works including dedicated turn lanes into Bellbird Flat Road and road realignment on sections of Kin Kin Road along the approaches to the bridge.

Some longer traffic delays may be experienced at times as we continue with the associated works. We thank the community for their ongoing patience while we complete these important works.

Construction started in late October 2022 and is expected to be completed in early 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Upcoming works:

  • installation of guardrail
  • embankment works
  • installation of pavement layers
  • continuation of drainage works
  • continuation of construction for dedicated turn lanes into Bellbird Flat Road
  • final wearing pavement surface to be completed
  • start of decommissioning works for the old timber bridge.

Expected impacts:

  • majority of works will be undertaken during the day from Monday to Saturday
  • between 7am and 5pm
  • traffic controllers, automated traffic signals, reduced speed limits, road
  • signage and variable message signs remain in place to advise of the changed
  • traffic conditions and to ensure motorist and roadworker safety
  • some longer traffic delays may be experienced due to the nature of the works
  • undertaken
  • priority access through the work site will be given to emergency vehicles
  • works will stop during the Christmas shutdown period, between late December
  • 2023 to early January 2024.
