In response to resident concerns and the fatality of a motorcycle rider and the serious injury of the driver of a car in June 2025 at the intersection of McKinnon and Louis Bazzo Drive we requested Transport and Main Roads (TMR) conduct investigations into improvements at that location that could have prevented such an incident.
We have received the below response in italics, which outlines following their investigations, TMR will be upgrading the signage on the McKinnon Drive.
Road trauma impacts the whole community, and my thoughts are with the family of the motorcycle rider who lost his life and driver of the car who was injured.
TMR is committed to improving road safety and I can confirm that TMR investigates all crashes involving a fatality. TMR’s investigations into the crash include a detailed review of the signage on the McKinnon Drive northbound approach to the intersection with Louis Bazzo Drive.
While there is an existing suite of signs to warn motorists, they are approaching an intersection and need to reduce speed, TMR is upgrading the signage on the McKinnon Drive approach to the intersection to further highlight the pending intersection and requirement to slow down. These works will include installation of regulatory 60 km/h speed limit signs from the 300-metre approach to the intersection. In advance of the new 60 km/h speed limit, TMR will install ‘60 ahead’ signage.
- The suite of signage update/installation works, to be undertaken between 27 and 29 August 2025, will also include: Installation of a new ’60 km/h ahead’ sign on McKinnon Drive, 600 metres before the intersection with Louis Bazzo Drive.
- Installation of a new 60 km/h sign on McKinnon Drive, 300 metres before the Louis Bazzo Drive intersection, with signs on both sides of the road.
- Installation of ‘School bus route next 13 km’ signage on McKinnon Drive, 250 metres from the intersection heading south and at the 12.75 km mark heading north on McKinnon Drive.
- Removal of ’50 in built up areas unless signed’ and ‘Reduce noise – Please limit compression braking’ signage just west of Yellowwood Close.
- Replacement of other existing signage on approach to the intersection.
Works are scheduled to be completed in three days between 7 am and 4 pm, weather and construction conditions permitting. Motorists may experience minimal delays during these works, which will involve shoulder closures. Traffic controllers, reduced speed limits, and signage will be in place to safeguard road users, roadworkers, and adjacent residents.
TMR’s contractor will endeavour to minimise impacts as much as possible. There will be no noise or dust issues associated with these works.
We have introduced a new practice of adding a temporary “new limit” plate to new speed limit signs within the North Coast Region to help highlight the new speed limit. These temporary sign plates are removed approximately two months after the installation of the new speed limit signs.
TMR apologises for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation during these important works.
We would appreciate any feedback from Noosa electorate residents on the above information to inform our ongoing advocacy via noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au.
