With Stage 1 of this project completed in July 2023 as previously updated, designs continue to progress on Stages 2 and 3 of the Kin Kin Road Widening Project. Collectively, these works are to provide greater safety to our residents and road users, and to minimise the need for ongoing maintenance and short-term fixes that continue to cause impacts to many.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) recently advised that both Stages 2 and 3 will require referral under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC) due to potential impacts on Matters of National Environmental Significance, which may influence the overall construction timeline currently anticipated to commence in late 2027.

Their full advice is as follows:

Design work is progressing to rehabilitate and widen key sections of Kin Kin Road. These upgrades will improve safety, enhance ride quality and help reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

As part of the design process, the project requires referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) due to potential impacts on Matters of National Environmental Significance in both Stages 2 and 3.

TMR is currently preparing the necessary documentation for submission to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

The EPBC referral process takes time and will affect the overall construction timeline. At this stage, construction is not expected to begin before late 2027.

We will continue to monitor the progress of the design works and update as any further information becomes available either regarding the EPBC referral or construction timeline.
