On 22 October 2019, an independent inquiry was launched to examine the shocking treatment of ex-racehorses raised in an ABC 7.30 report. Subsequently the Qld Racing and integrity Commission (QRIC) announced a four-week amnesty for all Qld racing industry horse owners and trainers to update their racehorse retirement data, resulting in 411 thoroughbred and 308 standardbred retirements registered. On November 9 Racing Queensland implemented a one per cent prize money levy from 1 January 2020 to support a rehoming and retraining program for retired racehorses.
