Every community is different and its local media outfits should reflect this uniqueness, not a statewide narrative. A 2022 Federal Inquiry into Australia’s regional newspapers recommended the Australian Government review government advertising expenditure across all departments and agencies with a view to ensuring a minimum of 20 per cent of government print advertising is placed in regional newspapers, and as Sandy has said, this should occur at a state level to ensure local publications receive a fair share of government advertising.
After the 2024 State Election, Sandy wrote to and met with the new Queensland Government regarding several matters important to our community, including ensuring regional newspapers have their fair share of government advertising.
Following this and advocacy from many, the Queensland Government announced that a minimum of seventy-five per cent of all press advertising placements will go to rural and regional newspapers across the state from 1 July 2025.
This commitment is very welcomed. Should there be any further concerns, we would appreciate feedback from Noosa state electorate residents via noosa@parliament.qld.gov.au.
