Our questions regarding the former Noosa North Shore Landing Ground Reserve, also known as the Teewah Airfield have continued, including seeking clarity on commitments made by government when they transferred the site to National Park in 2023, along with the future use of the site for emergency services and recreational users.
Question on Notice
Our Question on Notice to the Minister for the Environment sought clarification on whether usage provisions for emergency services and recreational users have been, or will be, extended due to the original period granted coming up for expiry, whether any process has been considered or commenced to revoke all or part of the National Park status of the site, and whether public consultation would be undertaken should any such process proceed.
The Minister provided the following response:
(a) Access to the former landing ground remains available to Sunshine Coast Sport Aviators and Noosa Flyers Club members for aviation activities and for authorised emergency services personnel during disaster events.
(b) As outlined in correspondence to the Member for Noosa dated 21 April 2026, options including revocation of all or part of the former landing ground from the national park tenure within the Great Sandy National Park continue to be considered.
(c) Any such process would be undertaken in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and the Lands Act 1994.
According to the legislative framework, consultation may not necessarily be required if the Minister determines adequate consultation has already been undertaken. Given the significance of any tenure change to this site, we will continue to monitor.
Community consultation and Right to Information
As previously raised, we have continued seeking the data of the 2023 community consultation, more recently following claims from both a recreational group and the Minister that this reflected 66% support for retaining the airfield.
To date, these results have not been provided to our office.
Given the importance of ensuring clarity and transparency, our office submitted a Right to Information (RTI) application seeking access to these consultation results in March 2026.
Petitions
In August 2025, two petitions were tabled in Parliament: a paper petition containing 178 signatures and an e-petition containing 3,210 signatures. Given the significant number of signatories to the e-petition, we requested a copy from the Queensland Parliament Tabling Office to better understand the proportion of signatories residing within the Noosa Electorate.
Following a review of the petition data, approximately 19.5% of signatories were residents of the Noosa Electorate, representing around 626 of the 3,210 signatures received. This in itself is similar in numbers of respondents to our Noosa MP annual survey and even though we would always like more, is considered an adequate sample of community sentiment.
Once information obtained through our Right to Information (RTI) application is received, a similar analysis to determine the proportion of consultation respondents who are Noosa residents will be undertaken to better understand the level of support expressed by our community.
