With the re-establishment of the Queensland Productivity Commission (QPC) in 2025, we wrote to the Treasurer requesting that the Commission examine forecast changes expected across Queensland in coming decades.

This included population growth projections, demographic composition changes and the likely impacts on communities and service delivery demands for both state and local governments.

The Treasurer has provided the following response:

The point you raise about the benefits of utilising an independent QPC to undertake forward-looking investigations to enable better planning is an important one. Indeed, in my first reading speech for the Queensland Productivity Commission Bill in November 2024, I highlighted the potential for the QPC to analyse the key issues Queenslanders face across generational lines and the long-term policy solutions that are needed.

As you indicate, intergenerational and service delivery challenges can vary across regions, and I note the specific challenges you have raised in relation to the Noosa electorate.

The government is currently considering priorities for forthcoming QPC inquiries beyond its current work program. While the final decision on scope and timing of the QPC’s future work plan will reflect the government’s priorities, your suggestion to examine demographic changes and the implications for service delivery demands is being considered in this context.

This advice confirms that the Government is considering future inquiry priorities for the QPC, including potential examination of demographic change and service delivery implications.

We acknowledge that this request will be considered alongside other priorities for future QPC inquiries. Forward-looking analysis of population growth and demographic shifts remains important to ensure that infrastructure, housing, health, transport and community services planning aligns with projected needs, and will be raising this for prioritisation at available opportunities
