During the Southeast Queensland Rainfall and Flooding Event in February–March 2022, tragically, 13 people lost their lives, 9000 homes and businesses were damaged, and over 180,000 families and businesses lost power. Many have yet to be able to move back into their homes. Noosa residents contacted our office regarding the doubling and tripling of insurance premiums in the aftermath, seeking an inquiry.

As Sandy mentioned in her Facebook ‘weekly wrap’ on Friday 22 September, following a reference from the Federal House of Representatives on 7 August 2023, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics commenced an inquiry into insurers’ responses to 2022 major floods claims, including for the:

  • south-east Queensland and northern NSW floods of February and March 2022
  • Hunter and greater Sydney floods of July 2022
  • Victorian, NSW and Tasmanian floods of October 2022
  • central west NSW floods of November and December 2022.

We are encouraging any Noosa residents who were affected by the 2022 floods to read the information and make a submission at www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House/Economics/FloodInsuranceInquiry

Further Information

Any enquiries, regarding the Federal Government Inquiry, should be directed either to the Standing Committee on Economics direct via floodinsurance.reps@aph.gov.au or via our local Federal MP.

A reminder, in March 2023 resulting from our advocacy for real time flood data to be available to Queenslanders, the Minister for Transport & Main Roads has advised that flood monitoring equipment has been installed in the Noosa Electorate in several locations. Further on this including exact locations are available at www.sandybolton.com/real-time-flooding-alerts-march-2023.
