The hard parts of the week are offset by the incredible people in our world, and this week was no different. Sinead below from Noosa Adventist College joined us for work experience, where she unearthed our book on basketball history🏀 featuring her uncle Danny Morseu, who represented Australia at the Olympics in 1980 & 1984!🥇 It felt meant to be, and we were thrilled to gift this to her family ❤️As well a big shout out 🙏to those who do an incredible job as secretariats, including Kellie from our HEIC who is now with the PCCC, and Alana with me below, who is heading to Scotland. Gratitude to you both and to all who work so very, very hard for our committees, as I am sure most would not realise the expertise needed, nor ability to work until the ‘wee hours’ during those big inquiries! 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐌 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐀 should never be politicized 😡 Cherry-picking stats to support a narrative does not deliver less crime, only further bickering and time-wasting 👎 We need transparent, comparable, and easily understood data available to all, and for the 2 sides of Chamber to end their warring and unite to sort out the basics, whether crime, housing or fuel prices as relayed in my speech below 👇 ... 𝐈𝐒 𝟏𝟔 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐕𝐎𝐓𝐄? 🤔Was the topic, with a packed red Chamber hearing the ‘For’ and ‘Against’ from panellists Professor Jim Allan, Dr Sofia and Make it 16 campaigner Hayes who did do battle! 🤼 With many countries already lowering the age, others advocating for, and major parties in Australia against, the debate saw neuroscience, political motivations and the lack of civic education brought forward as evidence. 😀 Key takeouts? The impacts of arbitrary determinations, the need for informed voters as part of furthering democracy, and that the sky hasn’t fallen in where the lower age has been adopted! Thank you to the Australasian Study of Parliament Group - Queensland Chapter, panellists, moderator Alex and all the young Queenslanders in attendance for the great convos around responsibilities, our systems and how civic education can be rebranded to ignite passion, versus the ‘yawns’ over topics like the constitution? 🤔😆 👉 To learn more of the ASPG, head to www.aspg.org.au/...
